Director of Chaplaincy, University of Mississippi Medical Center
A healthcare leader with a heart of compassion, Doris Whitaker is the Director of Chaplaincy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), the only level one trauma center in the state of Mississippi. She directs a team of board certified chaplains, spiritual care volunteers and employee ambassadors as they provide religious, spiritual and emotional support to thousands of patients, families, co-survivors, staff and students daily at the Medical Center.
Chaplain Whitaker is a sought after presenter and educator, regularly speaking on pertinent issues such as spirituality in nursing; the nurse in the faith community; religious, cultural and philosophical objections to care; BRA: boundaries relationships and awareness in compassionate care of women. Doris presented Faith and Cancer at the 2018 Young Survival Coalition Summit in Orlando, Florida and Caring for the Caregivers at the Mississippi Comprehensive Cancer Control Program Survivor Conference, “2018 Managing Cancer Challenges” in Tupelo, Mississippi. She serves as facilitator for the UMMC Schwartz Rounds for Compassionate Healthcare. Chaplain Whitaker also provides guidance as a member of the UMMC Ethics Committee, the Mississippi Chaplains Association, the Mississippi Organ and Recovery Agency Advisory Committee and the Vice Chancellor’s Committee on Inclusion and Diversity. In 2015 and 2018 Chaplain Whitaker received the prestigious Faith Leader of the Year and Chaplain of the Year Awards from the Mississippi Organ and Recovery Agency. Already in 2019, Chaplain Whitaker received the 2019 UMMC Pillar Awards for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion. Doris truly serves from a heart filled with compassion.
